Chapter Eleven

“Are you sure you’re going to be able to do this?” I flinched as the cluster of horses and riders banged into the wall. “Has Mom ever seen an arena polo match?”

Crue and I sat in the bleachers above the polo arena, which was located on the far northeast side of campus, and we watched the team practice. Mom had never let us ride a tricycle without a helmet. I couldn’t imagine she’d be okay with Crue on the back of a racing horse with a stick in his hand, fighting off the other competitors.

I wasn’t sure how I felt about the whole thing either. On the walk over to the arena, my heart had raced like I was the one running around the track and my belly had danced in anticipation of watching Nile ride, but now I wasn’t so sure I wanted to be here. “This seems dangerous.”

“Relax.” Crue didn’t take his eyes off the game. “It’s not anything worse than football or other contact sports.”

That was hard to believe, as six competitors on horseback, with long mallets in their hands, ran around trying to whack a ball down the arena. “I thought you said the riders aren’t supposed to touch each other.”

The coach blew his whistle, and the riders stopped as plumes of dust rose in the air.

“You’re not, nor the horses, and it’s a penalty if you do.” His focus was so intent, a jealous twinge grabbed my side. I’d never seen my brother that excited over anything, nor as completely absorbed in something as he was right then. “You just need to know what you’re doing.”

“And you do?” I shook my head. Crue couldn’t possibly be experienced enough to ride like Nile and his team. Half the time, they were standing up or leaning halfway to the ground. They had to focus on the ball, rein the horse with one hand, and use the mallet in the other.

“Not yet, but I will.” The determination in his voice led me to believe him. “Watch Nile. He’s impressive, and he says he’ll help me out as much as he can.”

Like I needed to be told to watch Nile. The only time I took my gaze off him was to talk to Crue or close my eyes in fear. I wondered if my brother was aware of how intense my feelings for Nile had become and if I should be worried about his reaction, but I’d worry about that later.

Right now, I wanted one thing on my mind, and he was headed my way. The coach must’ve called for a break. I got a closer look at Nile for the first time since I’d arrived at the arena. He wore a red T-shirt and white pants with some sort of shin guards over his black riding boots. Beneath his black helmet, tufts of his blond hair escaped and clung to his neckline.

Nile met my stare, and everything stopped. Sound stilled all around me, and I was aware of no one but him.
